Forest biomass

Firewood, chips, pellets, sawmill by-products and waste wood: biomass from forests and wood processing.

What this family covers

  • Firewood logs: split wood cut to length for domestic heating.
  • Forest wood chips: shredded wood from forest operations and hedgerow management, for automatic boilers.
  • Pellets: compressed sawdust, a standardised low-moisture fuel.
  • Sawmill by-products: sawdust, shavings, bark and offcuts from wood processing.
  • Waste wood: packaging, demolition wood and furniture, recoverable depending on their level of treatment.

Uses

Heat (domestic heating, collective and industrial boilers, district heating), combined heat and power, as well as materials (panels, pulp) and wood chemistry. At EU level, the Renewable Energy Directive requires woody biomass to be used where it brings the highest economic and environmental added value (cascading principle): Directive (EU) 2023/2413.
