The federal climate-adapted forest management programme (KWM) is increased by more than €50m to €200m a year from January 2027; new applications have been possible since 1 October 2026.

The federal ministries of agriculture (BMLEH) and environment (BMUKN) are raising the budget of the "Klimaangepasstes Waldmanagement" programme to €200m a year from January 2027, aiming to cover at least two million hectares.

The programme already covers nearly 1.7 million hectares of private and municipal forests, around 60% of them municipal. Owners can submit new applications to FNR since 1 October 2026.

Beneficiaries commit for 10 or 20 years to management criteria: species diversification, retention of habitat trees and deadwood, soil protection and water retention.
