Spain: Mahou San Miguel brewery switches to biomass with a 20 MW heat plant

Published on databiomass on Source published on Our method

The brewer has opened a 20 MWth biomass plant in Alovera (Guadalajara) that will use around 30,000 t/yr of forest and agricultural biomass and is expected to cut the site's direct CO₂ emissions by up to 95%.

Made up of two 10 MWth boilers, the plant is to produce more than 85,000 MWh of heat a year and avoid nearly 17,000 tonnes of CO₂ a year; natural gas will mainly serve as back-up.

It will burn around 30,000 tonnes a year of SURE-certified forest and agricultural biomass, supplemented by biogas from the site's wastewater plant; the use of brewers' spent grain is being studied.

According to AVEBIOM, the investment is around €16m, including €4m from the Spanish industrial decarbonisation programme (PERTE). Operator Magnon, an AVEBIOM member, will supply the heat for 15 years.
